Conversion Tactic to Combat LOP (Language of the Poor)
Perhaps you've heard it too often, There's just no way I can {earn more money, get rich, find a boyfriend/girlfriend, lose weight} etc.... So now what?
I previously shared the story of how I discovered the words “I can” when my friend told me to try saying it out loud.
Upon reflecting, why did it take some random girl on the playground to teach me these words?
Well, it stems from my family always telling me “YOU CAN’T”.
You can’t be whatever you want to be. You have to work a stable job.
You can’t stop taking ballet classes because as a little girl, you should learn how to dance.
You can’t eat another hamburger because you’re fat and you might get diabetes.
You can’t get bad grades because if you do, we’ll beat you and you’ll be punished.
While they had my best interests at heart from their point of view, they firmly taught me “CAN’T” more than “CAN”.
That was the narrative in my house.
Unfortunately, that’s just how it was back then and even now, I believe in many families, they’re still singing this popular LOP song.
Like most people who grew up in the lower 99%, they live through fear, lack/scarcity, anxiety, and therefore they desire control by leveraging projecting these emotions onto YOU.
They think they can’t, so surely, it would stand to reason that YOU can’t!
That leaves VERY little room for positivity, hope, compassion, and potentiality.
SO WHAT NOW?! Well, I have some ideas and a story to share.
